Schedule & Course Outlines

Friday, April 9, 2022
RBC Convention Centre, Winnipeg

8:00 am - 8:30 am   Buffet Breakfast   Sponsored by Bayer

8:30 am - 9:30 am   Headscratchers and Conundrums: Cases with Atypical Presentations of Common Conditions - Dr. Ravi Dookeran   Sponsored by Bayer
A series of cases that present as common diagnoses but have unique characteristics and patient findings that make them anything but typical.

9:30 am - 10:30 am   Sharing Stories of Resiliency and Reconciliation - Kevin Chief
As a sought-after speaker, Kevin draws on his humble beginnings as an Indigenous youth in Winnipeg's North End to working alongside business, community, and government leaders. Through sharing personal stories of resiliency, possibility, and hope, he is able to engage diverse crowds into inclusive and healthy conversations about reconciliation.

10:30 am - 10:45 am   Coffee Break   Sponsored by Visual-Eyes

10:45 am - 11:45 am   Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Neuro-ophthalmology - Dr. Behzad Mansouri
Several studies have shown that AI has equal or better performance to specialists in diagnosing certain eye conditions such as papilledema. Considering the shortage of eyecare specialists for nightshifts and ERs, and in rural and remote areas, AI may be a valuable additional tool to help non-ophthalmic specialists. It is also helpful in screening a wide range of patients with eye conditions in remote areas.

11:45 am - 12:45 pm   Virtual Eye Examination - Dr. Behzad Mansouri
A shortage of eyecare specialists has made eye diseases, which are treatable if diagnosed early, a significant healthcare burden. Because eyecare is mostly concentrated in urban areas, rural/remote areas have little or no access to standard eyecare. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of access to virtual medicine. Unfortunately, in eyecare a foundation for complete virtual eye exams hasn't existed. EyeMirage is an affordable/portable device designed for thorough home-based eye exams on a smartphone platform using EyeM app. EyeMirage/EyeM are being developed locally in Winnipeg.

12:45 pm - 2:00 pm   Lunch   Sponsored by Allergan

2:00 pm - 3:00 pm   Pseudoexfoliation Glaucoma: Peeling Back the Layers - Dr. Lisa Gould
The definition and clinical signs of PXFG will be reviewed, as well as how surgical outcomes are affected by this condition. The genetic and environmental factors contributing to the development of PSFG will also be discussed. Interesting clinical cases will be included in this talk.

3:00 pm - 5:00 pm   Contemporary OCT interpretation for Detecting Early Glaucoma - Dr. Brandon Prete   Sponsored by OSI
In this session, attendees will leave with a systematic approach to OCT scan strategies and interpretation for early detection of glaucoma. Emphasis is on understanding the functional anatomy of the optic nerve and case-based application of structure-function analysis in clinical care.

5:00 pm - 9:00 pm   Tradeshow
Our first Tradeshow in four years, with over 40 exhibitors in attendance. We will start with an open bar, sponsored by Bayer, from 5:00 - 6:00 pm and end with a dessert bar, sponsored by WestGroupe, from 8:00 - 9:00 pm.
