About The Churchill Pilot Project

The Churchill Pilot Project is an innovative initiative led in collaboration with Manitoba optometrists and the University of Waterloo School of Optometry & Vision Science. A dedicated clinic space has been established within the Churchill Health Centre, equipped with modern diagnostic technology that allows visiting optometrists to provide comprehensive eye exams, screen for eye disease, and prescribe glasses directly in the community.

Barriers to Care

Prior to this establishment, Churchill residents often faced significant barriers to care, including a 16-hour train ride to Thompson or costly flights to Winnipeg. By placing high-quality equipment in the community, this ‘eye-lane model’ makes this clinic sustainable and significantly improves access to essential eye care.

Growing the Program

MAO, Manitoba optometrists, and the University of Waterloo are working to expand the Churchill EyeLane model to serve nearby communities and apply this approach to other Northern and remote regions of Manitoba. To continue and grow this work, additional partners are needed, as these initiatives do not receive provincial or federal funding. Meaningful collaboration is essential to sustaining clinics, expanding outreach, and reducing barriers to care for Manitobans who would otherwise face significant challenges accessing vision services.
