Optometric Student Externship

Optometric students completing an externship in Manitoba must register with the Manitoba Association of Optometrists (MAO) before beginning their externship. This registration is required under provincial legislation.

Eligibility

Optometric students enrolled in ACOE-accredited schools of optometry in North America are eligible to apply for student registration in Manitoba.

How to Apply for Registration as an Optometric Student in Manitoba

To complete your registration, please ensure the following requirements are met:

  • Complete the online registration form
  • Mail a notarized photograph (additional information is noted on the online application)
  • No application fee is required
  • Provide a letter from your supervising optometrist confirming the externship arrangements and dates
  • Submit a letter from your optometric institution confirming:
    • Your current enrolment in the OD program; and
    • That you are covered by professional liability insurance through your optometry program

 

All required documentation must be received before your registration can be finalized.

Criminal Record Check Requirements

Canadian Citizens:

  • A Canadian Criminal Record Check including a Vulnerable Sector Search
  • If you have lived outside Canada within the past five years, a criminal record check from each jurisdiction of residence is also required

U.S. Citizens

Canadian Citizens to U.S. Citizens

  • A U.S. Criminal Record Check, including the equivalent of a Vulnerable Sector Search

All criminal record checks must be dated within six (6) months of the registration date

Non-Canadian citizens:

Both the student and supervising optometrist are responsible for ensuring all Canadian requirements related to residency, work authorization, and eligibility to complete an externship are met.

Application Review Timeline

All applications are reviewed by the Board of Examiners. While we make every effort to expedite the review process, timelines may vary.
Applicants are encouraged to plan accordingly.

Important Reminders

  • If documents are sent to MAO by a third party (e.g., your university), please contact the MAO office to confirm receipt
  • Incomplete applications may delay approval
